A Test Architect's Tale: Mastering the Testing Game in a World of Complexity

Let’s explore the insights and knowledge we’ve accumulated as test architects in recent years in our endeavors to drive change in various test organizations. Let’s also delve into the test architect’s tragedy: the profound awareness of the urgent need for change, coupled with the absence of formal authority to implement it.
The evolution of complex systems, each with numerous variants, requires the flexible adjustment of testing strategies and methods, further complicated by a highly regulated environment. Here, the need for immediate solutions to everyday challenges must be balanced with the foresight to maintain a long-term strategic vision. While we develop our strategies with a theoretical foundation, it is crucial to deliver concrete results that resonate with the teams to get their buy-in. Therefore, no matter if we aim to implement a new testing tool or method, shift a team’s mindset, or elevate the professionalism of testing practices, the question remains: How do we effectively foster change in our working environment?

Over the years, our experience has been shaped by developing testing strategies across various levels and domains, trying to cultivate a professional and agile testing mindset, and conducting agile testing workshops with development and test teams. Hear about the challenges and missteps we encountered, and the strategies we crafted. We'll give an honest look at our wins, the setbacks we overcame, and the critical lessons learned from both.
Attendees will leave with insights from real-life examples and inspirations how to implement change in their (test) organizations.

Thomas Kraus, Siemens Healthineers AG

With a career spanning over two decades at Siemens, Thomas is a senior key expert in test methodologies and a certified Siemens test architect. Never one to settle for the status quo, he revolutionized the verification of complex ASIC designs during his years at Siemens Industry. His quest for innovation led him to embedded software development, where he pioneered the role of the test architect. Since 2019, Thomas has been shaping the future of testing as a system test architect in the test center of computed tomography at Siemens Healthineers. While his current focus is on keyword-driven and AI-based testing methodologies, he has spent many years training teams in agile testing and crafting test strategies in various contexts.

Ulla Resch, Siemens Healthineers AG

Ulla Resch is a dedicated professional with a solid background in software development and testing, currently working as test architect at Siemens Healthineers in Forchheim. With a career spanning over 30 years in software development and 15 years in testing, Ulla has embraced various roles, including coaching and training in Agile Testing methodologies. She is an ISTQB Certified Tester at the Foundation Level and an Agile Tester, and Certified Test Architect. Her main area of work at present is in test automation.

Outside of her professional life, Ulla has a keen interest in the human side of technology, having completed a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology. Her journey in the tech industry began after graduating in computer science from the University of Karlsruhe and included a stint in the Motion Control division at Siemens AG. She likes to exchange knowledge and experience with others and did that also as a speaker at Siemens testing conferences and at the QS-Tag in 2019.
